Alice Raak as part of Materiality – a group exhibition exploring the quality or character of being material or composed of matter.

“Sidenbandet – Nästan tyngdlöst. En vindpust så huden knottras. Pårlande ljummet vatten, flyktigt runt varje sten. Reflekterande. Glittrande.

Knappnålen – En sylvass riktning utan spår. Håller samman utan att veta. Testar, och gör om. Sårar utan att märka. Outtröttlig och hänsynslös.”

Raak’s suite of metal repoussé bridges sculpture and two-dimensional representation, operating somewhere between relief and collage. In flowing compositions between recess and protrusion, she works with the reflective nature of metal. The reliefs create a textile-like impact that defies the inherent properties of metal, with shapes that convey her actions in shaping the form. The forms bend the light like a rippling lake, and the surface of the aluminium is treated to either mirror or mute the reflections. In this latest suite, she has begun to explore the surface of the metal further. Working in oil painting, this has opened up a new dimension for her practice, articulating form between the figurative and the abstract, as well as the surface’s material expression.

Stockholm based Alice Raak (2000), graduated from Konstfack’s Jewellery and Corpus programme: Ädellab in 2024. Over the past year, she has deepened her artistic approach at Steneby School’s Objekt & Smyckekonst Art programme in Dals Långed. Working with large-scale metal repoussé, her practice navigates the threshold between abstraction and figuration. Drawing from memory and lived experience, she constructs imagery that invites projection and interpretation, forging a visual language that balances physical intensity with poetic restraint.
